Important details

Admission criteria

They vary by field of study. For  many  schools,  the  examination  constitutes  part  of the application process:  some  exams  are selective  and  competitive,  (eg  Medicine  and  Surgery,  Veterinary,  Medical  Professions),  other  are  non-selective but mandatory, and aim to verify  the level of knowledge in specific scientific fields (e.g. economics and psychology). The knowledge that  the  student  must  have in order  to  follow the courses successfully,  is determined  by relevant  regulations  derived by each department and must be verified before registration through a test  verification  knowledge.  This  test  is not selective.  If  the  result  is  negative  in  any  subject,  the  student  is called  to  study some  further  courses  in order  to  arrive  at the  level  of the first year.

To be subscribed in a programme with limited admission,  the  applicants  must take mandatory  exams  in  national  level  (Medicine  and  Surgery,  Veterinary,  Architecture,  Dentistry)    or  in  local  level  (which  is determined  by each University for a certain number of departments).

Italian language programs

Instead of foundation,  many  students  choose  to  improve  their level  of italian  language,  studying  the  Italian  Language  in  Italy,  particularly  at  Universities for  Foreigners in Perugia  and  Siena,  which they  offer  language programs with duration  of a few weeks or months depending on the students' level.   The  Dante  Alighieri  Society  is  certified  center for the  Italian  language.  The  certificate  PLIDA is issued  from  the Dante  Alighieri  Society.    According to  the  European  Language Qualification Framework  of the European Council,  PLIDA  certifies the linguistic proficiency of the Italian language.

Europeans are not required to be tested in the Italian language in order to enroll in a University, but it is to their advantage to have  knowledge  of  Italian  at  level  B2,  certified  with  diplomas  type  PLIDA,  CELI,  CILS  or  other  equally.

Tuition fees

Tuition fees are set by the educational  institutions theirselves.  The amount of tuition depends on the chosen university  and the family income of the applicant.  The  average tuition fees vary between 850 – 2000 euros per year.  The Private  universities in Italy cost more.

Accommodation

Universities  provide  services for  finding  accommodation  (university department  or a person)  and  also  provide  information  for  rent for student  apartments  which are generally  more  economic compared to the rest.  Some universities have student  halls.

The  rent in  some  areas  may cost more and the prices range from 300 – 1000 euros a month,  according to the  area  and  the size  of  the apartment.  There is also the  choice of a  rental  room rather than a whole  apartment.  Tourist  regions and main cities are more expensive.

A monthly budget ranged between  700  –  900  euro is needed for  accommodation plus food, telephone communication, transportation  within  the country  and personal activities.

General information

Many undergraduate and postgraduate programs are offered  in English,  such as  Medical  studies,  Pharmaceutical,  Psychology  etc, both in Polytechnical Schools and Universities.

Italian Universities operate independently of each other and the  application deadline may be different for  each one.  National access exams take place on the same  day for every applicant and the exam registration process takes place online.  Usually, pre-registration takes place in the spring and the  registration in early fall.  The Academies of Fine Arts have  also online registration process around the end of summer for the entrance exam, which is placed towards the end  of summer – early autumn).
