Study in Hungary

Hungary's higher education system consists of public, private universities and colleges offering a wide range of subjects. During the last two decades the reform of Hungarian higher education has resulted in improved quality and accessibility throughout the education system. The Hungarian Ministry of Education and Culture oversees higher education while the Hungarian Accreditation Committee assesses the quality of educational institutions.

Language of istruction and duration

Languages of instruction are Hungarian, English, German and French, depending on the university. The largest number of universities also have English-language departments. In general, Hungarian educational institutions offer full-time, part-time and distance learning programs.

In Hungarian Universities: Bachelor (BA, BSc.) lasts three to four years (6-8 four months). Some schools, such as Medicine, Law, Dentistry and some Art schools, offer single programs of 10-12 four months which are completed with the acquisition of the Master's degree. The Master (MA, MSc.) lasts one to two additional years (2-4 quarters), with the exception of the Master for teachers which lasts 5 quarters. Masters in fields such as Medicine, Dentistry and Law take five to six semesters. The PhD takes an additional three years.

Applications

Candidates are eligible to apply for an unlimited number of places under these procedures. Applicants are admitted to their chosen place if their scores meet the scores set by the schools, as well as the order of schools and places chosen by the applicants. (IELTS / entrance exams).

Accommodation

Students have the possibility to rent a room in student residences where there is availability, since the demand in student residences is always greater. Admission to a student residence depends on the student's financial background and score. Selection criteria are regulated by various local student governments. Also, students can rent apartments since the rents are relatively low. Universities that do not provide student housing help students find housing.

Tuition fees

Tuition fees vary and range for:

Bachelor (B.A. – B.Sc.) from 2,250 Euro / four months – Medicine from 4,800 Euro / per year.
Master (M.A. – M.Sc.) from 2,750 Euro / four months.
Ph.D from 4,500 Euro /four months

General information

Hungarian universities also offer PhD degrees, while colleges offer only bachelor's and master's degrees. As of 2010, there are 18 state universities, 7 private universities, 12 state colleges, and 34 private colleges. Several of the private and religious institutions receive partial public funding.
